Hybrids were initially introduced to replace long irons, the point being to hit the ball long and straight from any type of lie. The mashie is specifically designed to do just this. The sole features two gliderails and a center keel, which reduce turf drag and stabilize the club through impact.

Through collaborations with Lamkin grips and Miyazaki Shafts, engineers at Cleveland Golf have removed 30 grams of weight from the club. Just as it does with drivers and fairways, the removal of weight increases clubhead speed, producing more ball speed and more distance. The mashie is longer from any lie.
