Why should a golfer buy a rangefinder in addition to, or instead of, a GPSdevice?  

GPS is a navigation device that is neither as accurate nor reliable as laser rangefinder technology.  Laser technology with TGR is fast, accurate, and, most importantly, personalized to your game.  Although some of the more sophisticated GPS units on the market will get you within a few yards of the center of a green under perfect operating conditions, the GX series gets you within 18 inches at 350 yards! If you are going to spend the money to get a reading, we believe it should be the most accurate reading you can get—not an approximation.

Your TGR technology sounds amazing—please tell us about it in layman'sterms.  

No other range finders take more variables into account. TGR, or True Golf Range, (offered in Leupold’s GX2 and GX4 models) accounts for laser-measured line of sight distance, incline or decline of the shot, temperature, altitude and personalized striking distance to give you a True Golf Range or “plays like” distance. All other rangefinders simply use incline or decline and distance, and don’t take into account all these other variables. This lack of information leaves the player with a less-than-accurate playing distance for the shot and slope.

If someone has a Leupold rangefinder for hunting, why does he or she need one specifically for golf (and vice versa)?  

Leupold’s golf rangefinders work on “first target” technology. It is designed to pick up a pin in front of trees. Hunting rangefinders are based on “most target” technology. In other words, they pick up a larger object first. If you were to use the hunting rangefinder for golf you would have a tendency to pick up objects behind the flag. In golf, we refer to this a “background noise” and it leads to a huge error rate. In hunting, you are looking for a larger target and do not want to pick up a smaller object between you and the target. If you had to buy one or the other for use in both sports, the golf rangefinder will work well for hunting if you are not in a forest or tree setting because “pinhunter” will pick up the first target and that would be the only drawback. 

Tell us a little about the people in your golf division--do they get to playa lot of free golf to test out your prototypes?

As with all of our technical innovations, they are spawned from our military and hunting background. Leupold’s goal is to provide players with the most accurate information the most quickly. Once the technical basis was built, we wanted to enhance practical applications that were specific to golfers’ needs. At that time, Leupold hired P&M Global to assist in development input as well as sales and marketing strategies. With over 50 years of golf retail and OEM experience and unique technical capabilities and marketing perspective, we were able to hone the product to golf’s most accurate product line. This is why 162 PGA Tour caddies currently use our product to map courses every week for the PGA Tour players they loop for. Their input was instrumental in developing the GX3 and GX4 as well as modifications to the updated GX1 and GX2.
