The Wedge

The Wedge

After the putter the most used club in the bag are the wedges. Such a heavy percentage of your golf game is played 100 yards and in putting a premium on the golf wedge. You master the short game and those scores will drop drastically. Just ask legendary PGA Golf Pro Dave Pelz. He has made a very successful career and impact on golf by teaching almost exclusively the short game.

Main Components Of The Wedge – Loft and Bounce

Loft Of Wedges

Easily put the loft is the angle of the clubface. The higher the degree of loft the higher and shorter your shot will go. Higher degree lofts do not equal more success. Always use the wedge that you feel most comfortable with and gets the ball closest to the pin. Too much loft with a fluffy lie and your clubface could go right under the ball. Below are the loft degrees for different types of wedges.

Pitching Wedge 46 to 48 degrees

A-Wedge or Gap Wedge 51 to 53 degrees

Sand Wedge 54 to 58 degrees

Lob Wedge 58 to 61 degrees

Bounce

The bounce of a wedge is so often overlooked but so very important. Have you ever used a friend’s wedge on a tight lie or on the range and felt like you could pick the ball so cleanly? This likely is due to a lower bounce on their club compared to yours. So if you are chili dipping those easy chip shots you should consider a wedge with less bounce.

Bounce is measure in degrees as well. Low bounce being 0 to 10degree, standard bounce being 10 to 14 degree and high bounce is anything over 14 degree. There is a need for a wedge with higher bounce in your bag. The high bounce is designed to get your clubface through the rough better. The tall grass will eat your low bounce wedge alive leaving you with poor results.
