Golf Ball Types

Golf Ball Types

Before we look at golf ball types, here are the plain and simple facts about the Golf Ball.

According to the “Rules of Golf,” every golf ball’s diameter must be at least 1.680 inches, and the weight must not exceed 1.620 ounces. The reasoning for the size of the ball is, if the ball was smaller in diameter it would produce less air resistance, which means it does not need to displace as much air to continue with it’s flight. Same rules apply for the weight of the ball, the heavier the ball is the less air resistance could slow it down, which in turn would allow it travel further.

Construction of a Golf Ball:

Two-Piece Golf Balls

The Two-piece golf ball has an inner core and an outer core. The inner core is primarily responsible for the golf balls distance. The inner core is solid mass. A high restitution outer cover wraps around the inner core. Essentially this cover allows for an increase of energy to transfer through the ball at contact.

Multi-Layer Golf Balls

Just as the Two-piece golf ball has two pieces, the multi-layered golf ball has three or four layers. If you are generating high swing/club head speed this is the construction of a golf ball for you. The added feel from multiple layers will give you the feel at contact that you desire.

Golf Ball Compression

Compression is the measured by the hardness of the core, which determines the golf ball ball feel during impact. A common myth in golf is that the higher, the compression, the farther the ball will travel, when club head speed is actually the important factor to get distance. For some golfers, a lower-compression ball will fly farther. In fact, many of today’s touring pros prefer a lower compression of about 80 for the added 'feel' rather than just distance. Determine the compression that is best suited for your game.of how hard the ball is--the higher the compression number the harder the feel (and the less it compresses

Cover of a Golf Ball:

Surlyn Covered Golf Balls

Surlyn is a material built for durability. With durability you get a cover material that is hard. The punishment your golf ball takes in a round is significant. The Surlyn cover withstands punishment very well. Unlike the old golf balls of the earlier days this cover is far less likely to slice or cut up. The dings and nicks are minimal as well.

Urethane Cover Golf Balls

This is the cover most desired as they are built for control. This softer material gives added control to the golf ball. More amazing than the control is the feel this cover has on contact. The bonus is the feel at greenside or with putting. Combine this cover with a multi-layered golf ball and you are set to play with an amazing round!

Golf  Ball  Types:

Spin Golf balls or Control Golf Balls

Are you slicing or just learning the game of golf? These generally soft golf balls are constructed to decrease spin. By decreasing the golf balls spin a golfers slices and hooks will be less exaggerated.

Distance Golf Balls

Want to go long? Hit drives past your partners? Distance golf balls are a hard two-piece ball built for distance. They are constructed to jump off your golf club at the quickest speed possible. Extreme speed is created allowing for increased distance on your golf shot.

Performance Golf Balls or Total Performance Golf Balls

Here is the golf ball of choice for those looking for overall performance. These golf balls are designed as the Yen &Yang of golf balls. In other words this is a truly balanced golf ball. These golf balls are often the ball of choice for a majority of golfers playing on a regular basis. You won’t win a long ball competition with this golf ball but you will stop it on the green! These golf balls are also multi-layered in most cases.
